EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
