The global fast-food chain has pulled a holiday advert made via generative AI after facing widespread online backlash.

The brief spot was created via AI video tools and was first released online for McDonald's Netherlands back on 6 December.

Social Media Response and Removal

Shortly after its release, viewers on social media criticized the employment of AI in the film. Many called it "uncanny" and "awkwardly stitched together".

"This incident serves as an valuable lesson as we examine the effective use of generative technology," stated a statement from the company.

The commercial was created for McDonald's by Dutch agency TBWA\Neboko and US firm The Sweetshop. It portrayed a series of scenarios that can go wrong over the festive season, using the slogan "the worst time of the year".

The Movement of AI Commercials

Campaigns that incorporate AI-created content have become a growing phenomenon among large brands, especially for the Christmas campaign season.

  • Coca-Cola has recently launched consecutive AI-created Christmas commercials.
  • Technical Challenges: As videos created using current AI video tools are more likely to degrade the longer they run, the majority of AI video outputs tend to be about six to 10 seconds in length.
  • Industry Concerns: The video also raised fears about automation in the advertising sector, with some observers pointing out it might reduce work for camera crews.

Response from the Production Company

Following the video's removal, The Sweetshop's CEO, Melanie Bridge, spoke in support of the project.

She stated, the development took "over a month and a half" and involved creating "numerous versions" which were then crafted in post-production "just as we would on any traditional production".

"This wasn't an experiment," Bridge asserted. "The result was a film."

Mixed Audience Sentiment

While the McDonald's ad was mostly criticized, the response for some AI-assisted holiday ads has been varied.

For instance, a consecutive AI-generated holiday ad from Coca-Cola reportedly achieved a significant "positive feedback" from online commenters.

However, various brands have also received scrutiny for using the technique in marketing. Italian fashion house Valentino, for example, was lambasted for ads that some called "low-effort" and "uncanny".

The incident highlights the ongoing discussion within the marketing and creative industries about the balance between AI efficiency and creative integrity.
