The fast bowler Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector the selector has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.

He has a history of spinal problems, with setbacks in multiple past seasons causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.

He mentioned that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
