The Himalayan nation's Political Landscape Sees Major Alliance Forged By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor
In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The late summer revolt was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's older political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Discussions Underway
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
